PEOPLE, Page 43Last PlayBy Emily Mitchell/Reported by Jeannie Park
Baseball players have lately seemed to be interchangeable,
hurled between teams like so many fastballs. Not MIKE SCHMIDT. The
Philadelphia Phillies third baseman played for only one club during
his 17-year career in the National League. The high standards he
faced were his own. Citing "a deterioration of my skills," the No.
7 all-time home-run hitter and winner of ten Gold Glove awards
retired unexpectedly last week. If his fans were bereaved, so was
Schmidt. Openly crying, he said he refused to hang around just to
add to his statistics: "My respect for the game, my teammates, the
fans, won't allow me to do that." Now, that's one for the record
books.
